Initial scientific results from NICI
The first two science papers based on observations with the Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager (NICI) at Gemini South are now published. One result includes discoveries of several previously unknown companions in binary star systems, led by Andrei Tokovinin of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (2010 AJ 140 510). The second paper, by Tim Davidge of the National Research Council of Canada's Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, shows the age gradient of star formation in the outer envelope of M83, with younger stars on the outside (2010 ApJ 718 1428). Seeking white papers on high-resolution optical spectroscopy by September 7, 2010
Gemini Observatory is embarking on a new round of instrumentation development. High-resolution optical spectroscopy is one of the most highly desired missing capabilities identified by the Gemini community, and we solicit participation to define the specific requirements. We welcome brief scientific and technical papers by September 7, 2010, to help refine the science goals and suggest feasible instrument configurations. GNIRS is at Mauna Kea
