Mode: | Wide-field Imaging
Additional instrument verification: | Test NIRI flexure in wide-field imaging mode. Check to see if steering mirror motion is continuous or sporadic in a real-world observing situation.
Telescope verification: | Check image quality on NIRI while guiding with P2 off-axis.
Proposed observing sequence: | Continuous 120 sec f/6 J-band observations on a quasar field over several hours. Guide with P2, and don't offset the telescope. No dithering.
OT program file: | available
Science background: | Quasar Q1331+170 chosen as a good target for an extended, undithered observation. It is bright enough to centroid on for the purpose of detecting image motion. The total of ~3.5 hours integration might reveal faint companion galaxies. A Lyman-alpha absorption system is seen in the quasar spectrum.
Target(s): | |||
