NIRI SV observation 25

Status: observations complete
Data link: not yet available
Assessment: under way
Mode: Wide-field Imaging
Additional instrument verification: Test NIRI flexure in wide-field imaging mode. Check to see if steering mirror motion is continuous or sporadic in a real-world observing situation.
Telescope verification: Check image quality on NIRI while guiding with P2 off-axis.
Proposed observing sequence: Continuous 120 sec f/6 J-band observations on a quasar field over several hours. Guide with P2, and don't offset the telescope. No dithering.
OT program file: available
Science background: Quasar Q1331+170 chosen as a good target for an extended, undithered observation. It is bright enough to centroid on for the purpose of detecting image motion. The total of ~3.5 hours integration might reveal faint companion galaxies. A Lyman-alpha absorption system is seen in the quasar spectrum.
Target(s):
Object approx. RA (2000) approx. dec (2000)
Q1331+170 13h 33m 16d 49m
Observing conditions: image quality: 50%-ile (0.6 arcsec at J)
sky transparency (clouds): 80%-ile (some cirrus)
sky transparency (water vapour): Any
sky background: 80%-ile
max air mass: 2.0
Observing time achieved: Approx. 3.5 hr on-source, undithered
Data release date: End of August, 2001
