Observation Preparation

You are here

This section mainly describes how to prepare and check GRACES observations. Setting up acquisition and observing sequences at Phase II is not intuitive until one is quite experienced (and maybe even not then). An important key to successful observation preparation is to start from the template observations generated by the Observing Tool from the configuration specified in yout observing proposal. Preparing observing sequences involves much more than setting up the observation of the target; the complete observing sequences must include "acquisition observations" (e.g., for finding the target and putting it in the spectrograph fiber). In addition, observations of telluric and/or flux and/or radial velocity standards could be needed.

It is recommended to start with the template observations in the OT and follow the How to Prepare your program note.  See also the GRACES OT Details link below for more detailed instructions.  Setting up a GRACES program in the OT is not like setting up programs for observatory instruments.  Because GRACES is considered a visitor instrument and is not supported in the S/W, we use hacks to generate what is needed for GRACES acquisitions (using GMOS) and science (interacting with Espadons).  Please follow the instructions carefully.
