Gemini South Telescope closed due to snow accumulation, July 11-25

Content owned by jthomas

Gemini South Telescope will remain closed through at least July 25th due to a large accumulation of snow and ice on the dome and roads.   It is uncertain when the roads will be passable and a crew can travel to the summit to begin clearing the large amount of accumulated snow on the dome.  Additionally, commercial power was lost and its return is also not expected until after the roads are cleared.  The installation is currently running on generator power but due to the extended power outage, fuel will run out before the roads can be cleared sufficiently for a large truck to arrive and re-fuel them. Therefore, the instruments will be warmed up and then take time to cool down to operational temperatures in order for normal operations to resume.  A futher update will be provided on Jul 25th..
