This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for a remarkable discovery that the Universe is accelerating as it expands. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Brian P. Schmidt, one of three people awarded this prize, will speak at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, Campus Center on October 19, 2011 at 7p.m. This discovery of what is called “dark energy” led to Dr. Schmidt’s 2011 Nobel Prize.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity to experience a first-hand account of the revolution that is happening in physics and astronomy and our concept of how the universe works,” according to Gemini Director Dr. Fred Chaffee. “Dr. Schmidt is a regular user of the telescopes in Hawai‘i and much of this work has been made possible due to the unique capabilities andconditions available on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea.” Dr. Schmidt is in Hilo as part of his work with the Gemini Observatory and the lecture is co-sponsored by Gemini Observatory, the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, and the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center.
Dr. Schmidt, of the Australian National University’s Mount Stromlo Observatory is the recipient of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics along with Saul Perlmutter of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/UC Berkeley, and Adam G. Riess of Johns Hopkins University and the Space Science Institute for their work in revealing dark energy. The discovery of dark energy has profoundly changed our understanding of the universe and inspired even morequestions that will keep astronomers busy for the foreseeable future.
