Gemini Observatory announces an opportunity for New Large and Long Programs.  Eligible PIs are invited to propose scientific investigations to begin observation in 2019B semester. Letters of Intent are required to be submitted no later than February 4, 2019 with complete proposals due April 1, 2019.  Details on large programs, the proposal process, and specifics on the 2019 call for proposals are available on the Large and Long Program webpages.

The 2019A Gemini Observing Tool is now available for download. This update is required to access the Gemini Observing Databases.

Observing databases offline Dec 11

The Gemini observing databases will be offline for several hours on Tuesday, December 11 while we perform software updates.

During this time the following services will be unavailable:

  • Observing Tool synchronizations, file transfers, and non-sidereal target queries
  • Phase I Tool guide star probability queries

The new 2019A Observing Tool should be available on Wednesday, December 12 and will be required to access the observing databases.

Gemini North new laser offered through Fast Turnaround

We are  pleased to inform you that Gemini North now again accepts Fast Turnaround proposals utilizing the laser.
The newest version of the PIT (released today) is necessary for the proposals.
At this point in time the Gemini South Laser is not available through Fast Turnaround

Gemini North Shutdown Sep 17-27

Gemini North will be closed for scheduled engineering work from September 17-27. During this time we will perform preventative maintenance on the science instruments, the acquisition and guiding system, the primary support system, and the telescope enclosure.

Update @ 9:20am - The ODB shutdown may start as early as 10:30am HST.


The Gemini North observing database will be offline on Monday September 17 from approximately 11am - 3pm HST for hardware maintenance.

During this time the following services will be unavailable:

  • Phase I Tool guide star probability queries
  • Observing Tool synchronizations and file transfers (Gemini North programs only)
  • Observing Tool non-sidereal target queries (Gemini North programs only)

...  and renewed -  After the major optical intervention that allowed to get rid of air bubbles in the lens systems, it started delivering science data again.

Gemini is now accepting proposals for observing time in Semester 2019A. The submission deadline varies with participant. A new version of the Phase I Tool (PIT) has been released to support proposal submissions.

New 2018B PIT Released

GMOS-S optical maintenance

GMOS-S came off the telescope on July 18, and after preliminary masurements on the CP instrument lab, the work for the collimator service started this week with the removal of the masks frame and its supporting structure, in order to free the way for the collimator removal.

International Gemini Observatory

The International Gemini Observatory  provides the astronomical communities in six participant countries with state-of-the-art astronomical facilities that allocate observing time in proportion to each country's contribution. In addition to financial support, each country also contributes significant scientific and technical resources. The national research agencies that form the Gemini partnership include: the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), the Chilean Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID), the Brazilian Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, the Argentinean Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, and the Korea Astronomy and Space Institute (KASI). The observatory is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with the NSF. The NSF also serves as the executive agency for the international partnership.
