Gemini Observatory and the US National Optical Astronomy Observatory are organizing a Gemini Data Workshop 19--22 July 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. Registration is free and open to anyone. The workshop will cover the basics of astronomical data reduction, followed by breakout sessions that then focus on specific Gemini instruments or capabilities.

The February ODB maintenance is complete and an updated OT is available. The new OT fixes several bugs so it is a recommended update. However, the first 2010A version (2010A.1.1.2) may still be used for fetch/store and TOO triggering.

Perhaps the only thing predictable about nature is its unpredictability. Of course, many natural events are highly predictable, such as the ebbing of tides and changing of seasons. But, as one tunnels deeper into natural phenomena, the vast majority of the universe appears unpredictable simply because it is so poorly understood. The splendor of the universe stems from not only its beauty but its capricious violence.

OT and PIT planning update to Java 6

For many years the Gemini Observing Tool (OT) and Phase I Tool (PIT) have been using version 1.5 of the Java language. Java 1.5 has now reached the end of its official service life (see java.sun.com). In order to take advantage of many bug fixes and new features Gemini is planning to move these applications to the current version of Java (version 1.6 or Java 6) starting with the December 2009 OT.

With great pleasure Gemini Director Doug Simons announces the appointment of Dr. Eric Tollestrup to the position of Associate Director for Development at Gemini. Eric has been at the UH Institute for Astronomy (IfA) since 2003, where he has been the Deputy Director of the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF).

International Gemini Observatory

The International Gemini Observatory  provides the astronomical communities in six participant countries with state-of-the-art astronomical facilities that allocate observing time in proportion to each country's contribution. In addition to financial support, each country also contributes significant scientific and technical resources. The national research agencies that form the Gemini partnership include: the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), the Chilean Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID), the Brazilian Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, the Argentinean Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, and the Korea Astronomy and Space Institute (KASI). The observatory is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with the NSF. The NSF also serves as the executive agency for the international partnership.
