Gemini IRAF v1.15 Released - Flamingos 2 MOS Support

Flamingos 2 MOS support is now available in the new full release of Gemini IRAF v1.15.  This new version also includes the changes from the recent v1.14 patch, as well as various bug fixes.  To install Gemini IRAF v1.15, use conda.  If you already have a conda environment (eg. geminiconda) with Gemini IRAF v1.14, activate the environment and install the "iraf.gemini" packages:

   > conda activate geminiconda
   > conda install iraf.gemini=1.15 --no-update-deps

IGRINS has no moving parts, and offers near-infrared spectra between 1.45-2.45μm high-resolution (R=50,000). The slit size in the spectral direction is 0.34ʺ, and in the spatial direction is 5ʺ. The plate scale on the imaging detector is ~0.041"/pix, and ~0.091"/pix in the spatial direction of the 2-D spectrum. An example of reduced 2D spectra are shown below.

Data reduction

Since IGRINS is a visiting instrument, the data are ingested into the archive sporadically. It is recommended to use reduced data provided to PIs via emails. These data include the recipes used, final reduced spectra, and telluric calibrations, and are planned to be delivered every two weeks in 2022. For the data format of the delivered products, and for the appropriate acknowledgements please refer to the IGRINS webpage.

The 2022B Gemini Observing Tool is now available for download. This update is required to access the Gemini Observing Databases.

The Installation Instructions are linked on the Observing Tool web page, and we recommend that everyone download their programs from the databases rather than import from saved XMLs.

The Gemini North Adaptive Optics system, Altair, is currently offline due to a recurrent and intermittent issue with its deformable mirror (DM). Please email your contact scientist if you have any questions or concerns about the potential impact on your program.

GNIRS to be Removed from the Telescope for the IFU Installation

On April 28th, 2022 GNIRS is planned to be removed from the telescope and warmed up in order to perform the GNIRS IFU installation and various refurbishment work, which includes replacement of ball bearings for both filter wheels. It is foreseen to have GNIRS back on sky for the IFU commissioning on July 6th, 2022. During this period, NIRI will replace GNIRS on the telescope.

International Gemini Observatory

The International Gemini Observatory  provides the astronomical communities in six participant countries with state-of-the-art astronomical facilities that allocate observing time in proportion to each country's contribution. In addition to financial support, each country also contributes significant scientific and technical resources. The national research agencies that form the Gemini partnership include: the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), the Chilean Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID), the Brazilian Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, the Argentinean Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, and the Korea Astronomy and Space Institute (KASI). The observatory is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with the NSF. The NSF also serves as the executive agency for the international partnership.
